Incidents of Travel in the 21st Century

Over the past decade and a half, photographer Peter Harris has focused his attention on the apparatus and architecture of travel and tourism. His documentary images of airports and touristic destinations are an inquiry into the nature of travel and tourism and its manifold roots in our desire for status, education, and the ephemeral “authentic” experience. Also on exhibit, as both bound volume and digital presentation, will be Harris’s project “Metatourism: Sicily,” an essay and photographic meditation on visiting the ancient cities of Agrigento and Selinunte.

Peter Harris studied photography at the California Institute of the Arts and the Rhode Island School of Design. Past projects include a photographic resurvey of the first scientific expedition to Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, and photography of European colonial architecture in southern China, for which latter undertaking he received a grant from the Syracuse University Committee on Faculty Research. Additional work may be seen on his website, therealpeterharris.com.
