The Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery at the University of California, Santa Cruz, presents Unique Multiples: Teaching with the Parkett Collection from the University of Castilla-La Mancha co-curated by Shelby Graham, director of the Sesnon Gallery, and Enrique Leal, assistant professor, print media, at UC Santa Cruz. This exhibition will feature approximately 60 selected works, from over 200 works, that make up the Parkett Collection* housed at the School of Fine Arts, University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM), Contemporary Art Archives and Collections, located in Cuenca, Spain.

The Sesnon Gallery at UC Santa Cruz is the only public educational institution in the United States that is exhibiting this selection of works from the Parkett Collection donated to UCLM in 2009 by the art collector Helga de Alvear in Madrid.

*Parkett describes itself as a small museum and a large library on contemporary art. It was a literary arts journal (1984-2017) presenting the work of prominent international artists, with essays by writers and critics, that commissioned artists featured in the publication to create a work of art specifically for Parkett, produced in limited edition, signed, numbered and offered for purchase to subscribers.

This exhibition highlights non-traditional mediums, fostering the engagement of students, scholars, and diverse publics with the works of acclaimed contemporary artists. Please watch our website for related events and workshops in printmaking and zine making. See below.

Unique Multiples is generously sponsored by the UC Santa Cruz Foundation Board Opportunity Fund and the Arts Division. We are indebted to the School of Fine Arts, University Castilla–La Mancha (UCLM) in Cuenca, Spain for sharing this collection with public institutions; art collector Helga de Alvear from Madrid; Cristina Peña Ruiz, UCLM Parkett Collection Conservator and the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sport. We thank UCSC Special Collections for hosting a public Parkett Open House, and the Contemporary Print Media Research Center of the UCSC Art Department for supporting related workshops.
