The Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery presents IRWIN 2020: Collective Solitude, the 34th annual Irwin Scholarship Award exhibition, which showcases the work of a select group of UC Santa Cruz’s most promising young artists. This year’s Irwin Scholars exhibition will be virtual through a 3D model of the Sesnon Gallery. Launching on June 3, 2020, this free exhibition will be accessible ONLINE 24/7.
About the Sesnon Gallery 3D Model
In a period of heightened uncertainty and separation, artists worldwide are tasked with finding creative ways to bridge the gaps between us. How can we shape feelings of fear and anxiety into visions of a brighter future? And how can we, as artists, work under such great limitations to maintain our communities and sense of togetherness?
Collective Solitude features thirteen artists whose works speak to this extraordinary period in history characterized by tremendous isolation and yet also incredible communal action. Their art addresses the many effects that distance has on individual, group, community, and worldwide levels. With confidence that such great constraints generate new and creative ideas, Collective Solitude aims to explore our present, estranged world where everyone is experiencing some form of loss and separation while working diligently and finding unique means to come together and support one another.
Showcasing a variety of approaches to contemporary art practice, the exhibition includes drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, artists’ books, and video installation. Due to county and statewide health ordinances regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, these works will be shown virtually through a 3D model of the Sesnon Gallery and accessible online, 24/7.
The 2020 Irwin Scholars are Aaron Martinez, Anastasia Oleson, Angel Gonzales, Chloe Murr, Dominic Ramirez, Edgar Cruz, Emma McWaid, Jocelyn Lee, Joshua Zupan, Morgan Tomfohr, Natalie Del Castillo, Rodrigo Ramos, and Veriche Blackwell.
About the Irwin ScholarshipThe William Hyde and Susan Benteen Irwin Scholarship Fund was established in 1986, with a modest donation by Sue Irwin, and now generates 12 annual merit scholarships to further the education of selected UC Santa Cruz students for proven excellence in the arts. The William Hyde Irwin and Susan Benteen Irwin Scholarship is our most prestigious student scholarship in the Art Department. The scholars are nominated by faculty to submit a portfolio of work and then are selected by an all faculty vote. This annual, professionally organized exhibition has become a tradition in the art department and for the Sesnon Gallery for over 35 years. This scholarship shows the far-reaching effects of support for the arts.
