Location: Sesnon Gallery

Appearing overnight and often disappearing the next, posters advertising senior recitals, art exhibitions, and performances form the dynamic visual backdrop to life on the UC Santa Cruz campus. Remove by X brings together a selection of this ephemera from the 20th century to provide a rich overview of the UCSC Division of the Arts and its creative past. The posters, once layered on the walls of bus stops, light poles, and bulletin boards, are sometimes nearly illegible, lacking critical information including location, date, or time. Yet, with irreverent humor and bold graphics, they offer a vibrant glimpse of campus life and the artistic output of our students.

The posters and ephemera on exhibition are drawn from the archives of Keith Muscutt, Assistant Dean of the Arts, 1978-2007, Kathy Foley, Distinguished Professor Emerita of Theater Arts and Porter College Provost, 1989-2001, and the Collection of the University of California, Santa Cruz, Special Collections & Archives.
